May Marks Mental Health Awareness Month & Steps to Hope New Support Group

Steps to Hope Intern and Polk County High School Student, Gracie Edwards, beautifully demonstrates the power of journaling.

As May unfolds, the spotlight turns to mental health awareness, a crucial topic that often dwells in the shadows. In honor of this vital month, Steps to Hope, dedicated to aiding survivors of domestic and sexual abuse, is introducing a new program for the public: "Healing Through Writing: The Power of Journaling & Art."

Starting on May 8th and recurring on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month, Steps to Hope will offer an ongoing series of journaling and art group classes designed to provide therapeutic support and creative expression. These sessions aim to offer a safe space for participants to explore their emotions, reflect on their experiences and embark on a journey of healing.

"Art and writing can serve as powerful tools for healing," says Project Coordinator and Healing Through Writing Facilitator, Becky Collins. "Our goal is to create a supportive community where individuals can explore their feelings, gain insight into their experiences and ultimately find healing and hope."

In addition to the group classes, Steps to Hope continues to offer free counseling services for survivors of domestic and sexual abuse, as well as their family members. โ€œOur organization recognizes that healing is a journey that requires comprehensive support, and our team of dedicated staff, advocates and licensed counselor are committed to providing compassionate care and guidance every step of the way,โ€ says Diane Nelson, Steps to Hope Executive Director.

For those interested in participating in the "Healing Through Writing and Art" classes or who are seeking counseling services, please contact Steps to Hope at 828-894-2340 or email services@stepstohope.org.
