New Years Resolution: Learn Self-Defense at Steps to HOPE
Like every new year, 2024 presents opportunities to set new goals and resolutions for change in their lives. Those goals and resolutions often involve work, finance, family, or other important interests. For many, the new year is a time for a fresh start by establishing a new exercise regimen, getting stronger, and improving self-image – resolutions that can all be tackled by attending the FREE Steps to HOPE EmpowerHer Self-Defense Program.
Personal safety is very important for everyone. Basic self-defense skills are vital in dangerous situations, whether it be at home or in a parking lot. Through this class, Instructor Brian Jones teaches individuals to build self-esteem and ignite the power within. "That's the purpose of the class, to push attendees past the ‘I can't do this' mentality," Program Manager, Cindy Wicklund said.
"One of the key messages learned from this course is everyone’s life matters. Brian helps you see you have the strength in you to deal with whatever is going on physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally," Wicklund added.
Jones, a long-time martial arts coach, loves helping the local community become empowered to learn something new and stay safe. He looks forward to helping citizens of all ages learn how to defend themselves in every situation.
EmpowerHer Self-Defense occurs each Wednesday in the Community Room at Steps to HOPE. Classes are held for all women ages 13 and above from 5:30-6:30pm. To register, please call 828-894-2340 or email programs@stepstohope.org.
